Are your goals yours?
As we go through life our goals can gets lost, or our understanding of what we really want to do seems to vanish as we keep going on the conveyor belt of what circumstances can sometimes place in front of us as what we are doing now.
Writing down goals or deciding what they are in practice is simple. Think of something that you want to do, break it down in to a series of smaller chunks and get it done right? Now not necessarily..
If you want to ensure that you are moving forwards with what you truly want to do, you need to consider at the start to that they are the right goals and that they really are yours.
Defining Your Goal.
We need to ask ourselves the right questions so that our goals are truly in line for us. To decide the goal itself.
Where do I want to be in 5 years time?
What is it that I would like to be doing?
Where would I like my life to be?
Think BIG, think BOLD, think out of the box! Try not to let the foundations of your world around you now or any constraints hold you back.
So, let’s ask that again….
What is it that you would REALLY like to be doing?
Is where you want to be in 5 years time something that truly excites you to the very core?
Is This YOUR Goal?
We can often find ourselves in a position where we have been driven by other people’s expectations of us, our family, friends, partner or society. However when we really dig a bit deeper we realise that what we are doing isn’t what we really want to be doing but what others expect of us or what we thought they did.
with this in mind it is key to check that the goal that we have in mind really is what WE TRULY want to do.
Ask yourself:
Are these my goals or someone else’s?
Is this what I want to do or what someone else expects of you?
Does this goal hugely motivate and excite me?
Is it something that I would feel greatly accomplished for achieving?
I you struggle to think of an answer think back to what you really enjoy, if there were no boundaries, no restraints or other areas holding you back.
What would YOU REALLY DO?
The Impact On Your Life & Others.
The next consideration is how would you doing this impact be to those around you. How would achieving it change your life, or family life or availability to do what you currently do?
Having an awareness of this and a consideration of this means that you can be prepared for how this may change your life and the considerations you need to bring I to your goal setting plan.
Talking to those doing this impacts and bringing them in to the loop can be a great way to make sure that you have had the right conversations and at the same time you have also added in some accountability that you will be working on this goal. A double wammy!
If someone is not happy to support you in your new venture or find workarounds to help make it happen, this raises a few questions for sure.
We have all heard the advice around surrounding yourself with people that support you and RAISE YOU UP, not those who will hold you back or down. Sometimes we can change as the people that we surround ourselves we outgrow, any true friend or relationship will be on your team.
You’ve Got This.
Sometimes all we need is the personal permission from ourselves to be ourselves.. To strive for what we truly want to do. To let go of old thinking and embrace the new, and the excitement of all we can become.
Lean in to what you want to do and own it.
You’ve Got this!
